Do You Wanna Fight... OR Wrestle?
Do You Wanna' Fight? ... or Wrestle? ============================
I've got to admit, I love watching MMA Fights.
Every time they're on we do the Pay-per-view thing and have a bunch of people over to watch.
But as all of our guests are whooping it up, and predicting boldly who the winner is going to be, I find myself studying the athletes.
I look for their strengths.
I also look for their weaknesses.
I look to see how they can be better fighters.
If you follow MMA you know that many of the champions of the sport are wrestlers.
Wrestlers excel at it. It's a sport where wrestlers have a distinct advantage...
BUT, there is a big difference between wrestling and MMA when it comes to strength and conditioning.
MMA fighters train months for 'the big fight.' It's a one-time event.
Wrestlers have many matches per week during 'the season.'
This calls for a different approach when training for each sport.
You see, when you have a single event to train for as you do in MMA fighting, powerlifting, and boxing, you can periodize your training. That means that you can train your body in mini-cycles that lead to a 'peak' performance on the projected date of your competition. In other words, you train to be at your best for that one special day.
In wrestling, you have to keep a 'peak' for months straight. Because of that, you need to train with an off-season system that will get you stronger, faster and more conditioned. You also need an in-season system that will allow you to keep that strength for months straight.
The easiest way to keep your peak strength for wrestling is to use a HIT approach to your training. It is the fastest way to get stronger. It is all about brief, intense workouts that require a muscle to be trained until the weight can no longer be lifted in good form. At that point, it's on to the next exercise. By training a muscle to momentary muscular failure you keep your strength level high. This assumes, of course that you are also feeding your body correctly as well as resting.
No matter what sport you're in, training is a science!
